Eric G's Top 5 Power Tools everyone should own
I feel that every homeowner should have a basic set of power tools for Around the House. Unless you are the type of person that has a Handyman Service saved in your favorites on your phone there are some projects that you might want to tackle.
First you need to pick a power tool brand so you can share batteries and have one platform that you can work with. This will save you have five different battery chargers taking up bench space in your garage or tool shed. If you pick a name brand like Ryobi for the small project homeowner or Craftsman or DeWalt or plenty of other name brands you will be fine.
For the sake of the argument, I am going to show you what I have at home. Now this is plenty larger than a homeowner needs but these are the models that I depend on each day I am taking on projects.
1. Impact Driver. This is great for drilling and fastening things together with screws or lags.
I have the M18 Fuel ¼” Hex Impact Driver with One Key XC Kit #2857-22 This gives you the option of tool tracking and with 2000-lbs of torque it gets the job done faster. Plus, its small size lets you fit into small places.
2. Circular Saw: Now the new saws that run off a battery will outperform the corded saw. I run the M18 Brushless 7 ¼” circular saw #2631-21. I like the larger blade for cutting larger wood like a 4×4 and even stability on plywood panels. Plus, it is lighter than most corded saws. https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Woodworking/Circular-Saws/2631-21
3. Sawzall reciprocating Saw: This is great for emergencies or projects around the house. I am running the M18 Fuel Sawzall recip saw with One Key. #2822-22. This is one of my favorite tools for Demo Day or even Storm Clean up. https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/SAWZALL-Reciprocating-Saws/2822-22
4. Multi-Tool: One of my favorite tools in the toolbox is the Multi-Tool. I am running the M18 Fuel Oscillating Multi-Tool. #2836. This is great for flush cutting or cutting trim in small areas. With the right blade it can cut almost any material and is great for cutting a hole in something flat with square corners. https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Woodworking/Oscillating-Multi-Tool/2836-21
5. Orbital Sander: This is great for refinishing something or just making it smooth. I love the battery with no cord. It opens it up and makes it much easier. I use the M18 Random Orbit Sander. #2648-21 https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Woodworking/Sanders/2648-21
One big Note: There are plenty of brands out there that make a ton of great tools. Pick your brand and enjoy taking on projects!
